Malaysia is on the Malay Peninsula in South East Asia. The nation also includes Sabah and Sarawak on the island of Borneo to the east. Its area slightly exceeds that of New Mexico. Hindu and Buddhist cultures imported from India dominated early Malaysian history. Its interesting cultural diversity can be largely accredited to the country's long and on-going interaction with the outside world and colonial rule by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British. Independence was achieved on August 31.

Malaysia is considered as one of the most developed countries in the ASEAN region. It is the world's largest exporters of palm oil, natural rubber, tropical timber, cocoa beans and pepper. Tourism is also an important factor which generates revenue.

In spite of the continuous improvements that are visible, it still lags behind in only one aspect. That is the quality of its universities and education system.

Education system in Malaysia is supervised by two government ministries. The Ministry of Education (Kementerian Pelajaran) handles matters concerning to pre-school, primary school, secondary school and post-secondary school. Tertiary education matters are dealt by the Ministry of Higher Education (Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi). Each state has an Education Department to coordinate educational matters in its territory. According to the Federal Constitution and the Education Act of 1996, the main legislation governing education is education is compulsory and free to every child of school going age.
