The name Ivory Coast was given by the French who ruled it for quite a long time. The official name is Republique de Cote d Ivoire and the People are called Ivorian's. The official language of the Ivory Coast is French which is used in the government offices and in all of the educational institutions.

Ivory Coast has varied physical features. From being flat and sandy on the eastern coast, rocky on the western coast and tropical forests beyond the coasts, Ivory Coast makes itself a splendid place for visit. The year round climate of the Ivory Coast is mildly hot and humid. Liberia, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, and Burkina Faso border this country. Petroleum and Diamonds are the main natural resources found in the country and Cocoa is the main export.

The system of Education in Ivory Coast is much developed compared to any other country in Africa. This country has one of the highest adult literacy rates in West Africa. The government makes great efforts to see that everyone learns to read and write. To enforce this, the country has made a law saying that all children must go to elementary school if one is near their house. Since their independence the number of children attending school has greatly increased. The government works extra hard to make sure that everyone learns to read and write. Ivory Coast is a growing country the old traditional beliefs are still in practice for a good percentage of the population.

Although with the increase in the amount of literacy in the country, Education in Ivory Coast doesn't come without negativities. Emigrant teachers' salaries account for a disproportionate share of current expenditures, reducing the benefits to the nation. According to a data of November 1988, there was a large amount of drop out because of the internal deficit like lack of necessary infrastructure, computer equipment, and qualified human resources. The 1980's also showed the weak link between education and employment due to the Recession. Students migrate to other parts of the country as well as world in look for better opportunities and future.
