Students from Bihar

Bihar being one of the 28 states in India is located in the eastern part of the country. It is bounded by the country of Nepal on north, by Uttar Pradesh on west, by Jharkhand on south and by West Bengal on east. The capital of Bihar is Patna situated on the banks of our holy river Ganga. The port of Kolkata is not far away. The Bihar plain is divided into two unequal halves by the river Ganges which flows through the middle from west to east. The southern part of the state became the new state Jharkhand in the year.

The official language of Bihar is Hindi, Urdu and Maithili. Hindi is the first official language of state.

As we know Bihar now, it was known as Magadh earlier, the great dynasties of Maurya and Gupta. Spirituality has a special place in Bihar. Bihar, the ancient land of Buddha, has witnessed golden period of Indian history. Mahavir Jain was born in Bihar. Mahatma Buddha got enlightened in the modern day district of Gaya. Guru Gobind Singh, The last and 10th Guru of Sikhism, was born in Patna. Lot of with Sufis saints who preached Islam were born in Bihar.

Bihar is a poor state. According to records, it has the lowest per capita income in all the major states in India. The economy of Bihar is service oriented and agricultural based.

Bihar had been a major centre of learning in ancient India, It was the birthplace of two principle universities- Nalanda and Vikramshila. The origin of learning from the time of Buddha or perhaps earlier, was lost during the medieval period when it is believed that plundering armies of the invaders destroyed these centres of learning.

With establishment of University at Patna along with other centres of high learning, Science College- Patna, Prince of Wales Medical College, Bihar Engineering College (Now National Institute of Technology, Patna), Bihar has revived the state of education in the recent years. Yet the state shows a very low performance in the field of education.

With the continuous deterioration of education system, it is seen that students of Bihar now have to migrate to different states and countries to study.

Patna is considered to be an Educational hub for the Eastern India. It is an important center for preparation of exams like IIT, IAS, and Engineering and Medical entrance. Quality primary and secondary education is available in schools but there is no quality higher education which is the main reason of migration of students outside Bihar.

The old school of thought of opting conventional courses like Medical and Engineering still predominates the state instead of opting for journalism, fashion or animation. The student is limited only to a few choices and can't think anything beyond the scope of engineering or medical or IAS. Opportunities present in Bihar are less for higher education. There also lack of technical and entrepreneur skills in the youth of Bihar. They say Karnataka has Narayan Murthy (of Infosys), Bengal has Subrat Roy(of Sahara), Gujrat has Ambani's but Bihar has none. This has led to a "flooding" of students to seek educational opportunities in other states, such as New Delhi and Karnataka, even for graduation level college education.

This problem is further aggravated by increase in population. The yearning for higher education has led to a migration of the student.

Government has to take fierce steps for development in the field of education. Recent policy initiatives and improvements in primary school enrolment show that Bihar is making progress in improving its education Specialized courses in the field of science and technology has to be focussed on. National institutes of learning such as IIT, IIM and AIIMS, IISER, NISER have had a good representation from Bihar.

Bihar education will come up with flying colours within a few years if some more concentration is given on.
