Sikkim, a beautiful state in the North East is the least populated state. It has the splendid Gangtok as its capital. The world's third highest peak, Kanchenjunga, is located here. The state has twenty-eight mountain peaks, twenty-one glaciers, 227 high altitude lakes, five hot springs, and over 100 rivers and streams, including the famous Teesta, which is also called "lifeline of Sikkim". The picturesque villages, hot springs and waterfalls have a compelling appeal and travellers have real pleasure in discovering this mystical land of spectacular natural beauty. The panoramic perfection of the snow-capped Himalayas, the heady scent of flower-bedecked meadows, the vibrant culture and joyous festivals, the infinite variety of its flora and fauna makes this city a wonderful place for visit.

Sikkim shares its border with Nepal in the west and Bhutan in the east, with the Tibetan plateau rising from its northern border. It was once a Himalayan monarchy and part of the fabled Silk Route to China. Its merger with India in 1975 has unfolded a world of treasures in this hidden land.

Coming to Education, Literacy in Sikkim is contributed to 69.68%, which breaks down into 76.73% for males and 61.46% for females. The largest institution is the Sikkim Manipal University of Technological Sciences, which offers higher education in engineering, medicine and management. It also runs a host of distance education programs in diverse fields. There are also state-run polytechnical schools, Advanced Technical Training Centre (ATTC) and Centre for Computers and Communication Technology (CCCT) in Sikkim which offer diploma courses in various branches of engineering. Sikkim University a central university, began operating in 2008 at Yangang, which is situated about 28 km from Singtam. Many students, however, migrate to Siliguri, Kolkata, Bangalore and other Indian cities for their higher education. Bangalore has become one of the hottest destination for students in the south, as the reasons for it being detailed below.
